The creation of the Maritime Research Institute fills a gap in the maritime industry. Its purpose is the investigation of accidents, pollution, maritime routes, logistical support, infrastructure, human resources, marine and coastal resources and others related to the sea, in addition to teaching at a higher level, offering specialized master's degrees and doctorates as far as possible. La Creación del Instituto Marítimo de Investigación, viene a llenar un vacío en la industria marítima. Su finalidad es la investigación de accidentes, polución, rutas marítimas, apoyo logístico, infraestructura, recurso humano, recursos marino y costeros y otros relacionados con el mar, además de la enseñanza a nivel superior ofreciendo maestrías y doctorados especializados en la medida de lo posible. La visión principal es que Panamá lidere este renglón específico de la industria marítima y podamos ofrecer a la región las mejores experiencias en materia de investigación de siniestros, abordajes, accidentes, rutas de transporte, política de fletes, aportes en logística y áreas adecuadas para emplazamientos portuarios y otros aspectos relacionados con toda la industria marítima.
