Descripción The relationship between equine welfare and the standard of living of rural families in the Republic of Panama was evaluated. The analyzes were conducted using information provided by World Horse Welfare (WHW), a non-profit organization that promotes the welfare of the species and its association with human society. The data are reported for the period between June and October 2019 and the variables include information on the owner’s socioeconomic dimensions (age, level of education, experience in handling animals, size of the property, size of the growing area, size of the area destined for livestock activity and weekly income obtained with the help of the animal) and animal welfare (weekly working hours, grazing hours, working days, animal maintenance costs, veterinary assistance, hoof injuries, presence of colic, lameness, fungi and parasites, respiratory problems, practice of colic, lameness, fungus and parasite treatments, feeding diversification, handling the animal at the end of its useful life, daily feeding, branding, disability, vaccination and deworming). Continuous variables were divided equally into classes and discontinuous variables were treated binomially. The dependent variable was established through an impact index created by the sum of the values attributed to the variables of the animal welfare dimension. The data were described through measures of central tendency. Correlation analysis will also be carried out and a model of the impact of the owners’ socioeconomic conditions on the level of animal welfare will be established. The results showed that in our region the welfare conditions of the species are from regular to low, and that it is verified in a heterogeneous way between the provinces. The level of education of the owners, the extension of the area destined to the livestock practice and the weekly income affect the welfare condition of the animals, being that the best state of the animals is related to the highest education indices. Lower education rates and overexploitation of animals negatively affect the welfare of the species.
Descripción Fue evaluada la relación entre el bienestar equino y el nivel de vida de familias rurales en la República de Panamá. Los análisis fueron realizados usando la información proporcionada por la World Horse Welfare (WHW por sus siglas en inglés), organización sin fines de lucro que promueve el bienestar de la especie y su asociación con la sociedad humana. Los datos se reportan al periodo entre Junio y Octubre de 2019 y las variables incluyen informaciones de las dimensiones socio-económica del propietario (edad, nivel de educación, experiencia en el manejo de los animales, tamaño de la propiedad, tamaño del área de cultivo, tamaño del área destinada para la actividad pecuaria e ingresos semanales obtenidos con ayuda del animal) y bienestar animal (horas semanales de trabajo, horas de pastoreo, días de trabajo, costos de mantenimiento del animal, asistencia veterinaria, lesiones en cascos, presencia de cólicos, cojeras, hongos y parásitos, problemas respiratorios, práctica de tratamientos de cólicos, cojeras, hongos y parásitos, diversificación de alimentación, manejo del animal al final de la vida útil, alimentación diaria, herrado, incapacidad, vacunación y desparasitación). Las variables continuas fueron divididas en clases de forma equitativa y las discontinuas tratadas de forma binomial. La variable dependiente fue establecida a través e un índice impacto creado por la suma de los valores atribuidos a las variables de la dimensión bienestar animal. Los datos fueron descritos a través de medidas de tendencia central. También se realizaran análisis de correlación y se estableció un modelo del impacto de las condiciones socio-económicas de los propietarios sobre el nivel de bienestar de los animales. Los resultados demostraron que en nuestra región las condiciones de bienestar de la especie son de regular a baja, y que se verifica de forma heterogénea entre las provincias. El nivel de educación de los propietarios, la extensión del área destinada a la práctica pecuaria y los ingresos semanales inciden sobre la condición de bienestar de los animales, siendo que el mejor de estado de los animales se relaciona con los mayores índices de educación. Los menores índices de educación y la sobre-explotación de los animales afectan de forma negativa el bienestar de la especie.
