Descripción The HIV and AIDS pandemic is a devastating situation. People who suffer from this disease are exposed to the stigma that revolves around it, which causes discrimination towards them and generates a negative impact in the psychological and social sphere; furthermore, it becomes a major obstacle to medical care and prevention. Objective: This review aims to determine how stigma and discrimination influence the mental health of people with HIV / AIDS (seropositive). Methodology: The study carried out was a literature review of a narrative type. The Scielo and Redalyc databases were consulted; the institutional web pages of UNAIDS and WHO and at the national level the web pages of MINSA and the National Assembly of Panama. The data collected correspond to the period from 2010 to 2020. Result: 26 studies were identified of which 8 were qualitative, 9 quantitative, 6 of mixed methodology and 3 bibliographic reviews. Of the identified studies, 10 were conducted in South America, 4 in North America, 6 in Central America and the Caribbean, 5 in Europe, and 1 in Oceania. The results indicate that stigma and discrimination affect the well-being of HIV-positive people and this negatively influences their psychological state. In quantitative studies, about 50-65% of the sample had symptoms of depression or anxiety and they were the women who were most affected. Conclusions: It was determined that the stigma and discrimination to which HIV-positive people are exposed, plus the stressors of the disease itself can significantly influence the development of psychological disorders, much more if they do not have an adequate support network.
Descripción La pandemia del VIH y SIDA es una situación devastadora. Las personas que sufren esta enfermedad se ven expuestas al estigma que gira en torno a la misma, lo que ocasiona discriminación hacia ellos y genera un impacto negativo en el ámbito psicológico y social; además, se convierte en un obstáculo importante para la asistencia médica y la prevención. Objetivo: Esta revisión tiene como fin determinar cómo influye el estigma y discriminación en la salud mental de las personas con VIH-SIDA (seropositivas). Metodología: El estudio realizado fue una revisión de literatura de tipo narrativo. Se consultaron las bases de datos Scielo y Redalyc; las páginas web institucionales de ONUSIDA y OMS y a nivel nacional las páginas web del MINSA y la Asamblea Nacional de Panamá. Los datos recolectados correspondían del periodo del 2010 al 2020. Resultado: Se identificaron 26 estudios de los cuales 8 eran cualitativos, 9 cuantitativos, 6 de metodología mixta y 3 revisiones bibliográficas. De los estudios identificados, 10 fueron realizados en Sur América, 4 en Norte América, 6 en Centro América y el Caribe, 5 en Europa y 1 en Oceanía. Los resultados indican que el estigma y discriminación afecta el bienestar de las personas seropositivas y eso influye negativamente en el estado psicológico. En los estudios cuantitativos, cerca del 50-65% de la muestra presentaba síntomas de depresión o ansiedad y eran las mujeres quienes se veían más afectadas. Conclusiones: Se determinó que, el estigma y discriminación a la que personas seropositivas se ven expuestas, más los factores estresantes de la propia enfermedad pueden influir significativamente en el desarrollo de trastornos psicológicos, mucho más si estos no cuentan con una red de apoyo adecuada.
