Descripción The purpose in life is key to face diverse situations that arise in human beings, such as the current pandemic situation and the effects it has on people's general state of health. The present study aims to establish the purpose in life and its relationship with the emotional state of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study included 501 Nicaraguan university students with an age M = 20.9 years (SD = 5.2 years) and 56% female. The participants answered the surveys online. The tests applied were: PIL, EVEA and PSS, together with an ad hoc questionnaire to determine the participants' level of physical activity and relaxation. The mean value of the PIL test was 107.1 (SD = 20.4) indicating that the sample has a medium sense of achievement. The PIL test scores correlated positively with joy (p < .01) and negatively with anger (p < .01), anxiety (p < .01), depression (p < .01) and stress (p < .01). The sample reported a low level of physical activity and relaxation activities, and sleep problems were generally low in prevalence. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, having a clear purpose in life can be decisive in coping with stress and tension, and the promotion of PA and relaxation is suggested to maintain people's overall health.
