Descripción This article aims to provide a historical analysis of Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) and archaeological research in underwater contexts in the country. Panama is the first country to ratify the 2001 UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, which is 21 years old. The country has 2 500 km of coastline and 2 210 km2 of territorial waters, the Isthmus of Panama, and a valuable submerged heritage. The isthmus has been crossed, interacted with, and developed by various Central and South American cultures from the earliest times, with industries of Paleolithic traditions. It is also heir to an extensive maritime history that links pirates, privateers and enemy armies to Spain, trade and smuggling, wealth, and pearls, and suffered many shipwrecks due to storms and battles. In Panama, some exploration and research work has been carried out on submerged cultural property, and recently a research area in nautical and underwater archaeology has been created at the Universidad de Panamá. 
Descripción Este artículo tiene el objetivo de ofrecer un análisis histórico sobre el Patrimonio Cultural Subacuático (PCS) y las investigaciones arqueológicas en contextos subacuáticos en el país. Panamá es el primer país en ratificar la Convención de 2001 de la UNESCO para la protección del patrimonio cultural subacuático, la cual cumple 21 años desde su creación. El país cuenta con 2 500 km de costas y 2 210 km2 de aguas territoriales y un valioso patrimonio sumergido. Por el istmo transitaron, interactuaron, y desarrollaron diversas culturas del Centro y Suramérica desde las más tempranas, portadoras de industrias de tradiciones paleolíticas. Además, es heredero de una extensa historia marítima que vincula a piratas, corsarios y armadas enemigas a España, comercio y contrabando, caudales y perlas, sufrió por tempestades y combates no pocos naufragios. En Panamá se han realizado algunos trabajos de exploración e investigación de los bienes culturales sumergidos y recientemente la creación de un área de investigación en arqueología náutica y subacuática en la Universidad de Panamá.
