Descripción This study aims to typify, characterize, and identify productive limitations of the dairy production systems of the lower zone of the Canton of Turrialba, Costa Rica. A survey was carried out on producers or managers of bovine milk production systems of small scale located in the municipalities of Tayutic, Tuis and La Suiza. The information was obtained through semi-structured interviews applied to 43 owners/administrators of dairy farms located in the area. Structural, management, productive and sociodemographic variables of the respondents were investigated to identify the systems. Three production systems were identified using two multivariate analysis techniques: i) Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and ii) Cluster Analysis (CA). It was found that the study population corresponds mainly to small farms with a low level of use and adoption of technology, as well as the lack of productive pastures adapted to the types of soil in the area.
Descripción Con el objetivo de realizar una tipificación, caracterización e identificación de limitantes productivas de los sistemas productivos lecheros de la zona baja del Cantón de Turrialba, Costa Rica, se realizó una encuesta a productores(as) o encargados de sistemas de producción bovinos de leche de pequeña escala ubicados en los distritos de Tayutic, Tuis y La Suiza. La información fue obtenida a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas aplicadas a 43 titulares/administradores de fincas lecheras ubicadas en la zona. Para la identificación de los sistemas, se indagó sobre variables estructurales, de manejo, productivas y sociodemográficas de los encuestados. Mediante dos técnicas de análisis multivariado: i) el análisis de componentes principales (ACP) y ii) el Análisis de conglomerados (AC), se identificaron tres sistemas de producción. Se encontró que la población de estudio corresponde principalmente a pequeñas explotaciones con un bajo nivel de uso y adopción de tecnología, así como también la falta de pasturas productivas adaptadas a los tipos de suelos de la zona.
