Descripción Popular folk music has traditionally confirmed entrenched definitions of what constitutes masculinity and femininity. The pindín or typical Panamanian music, not only is the popular essence of Panamanian society but is also a driving force in popular youth culture. This article examines how young university women make sense of female representation in the pindín, the most listened musical genre in the media and the one with the most public performances in Panama, and how do they relate these messages with their own feminity. Many researchers have only utilized critiquing content to study the interpretation of women music, this study also applies the interpretation of the audience to figure out, from a gender perspective, how Panamanian women are represented in the pindín, how female university students interpret this representation, and the effect of these representation of women in Panama is transmitted from the male gaze, in the content analysis it was found that, whether men or women wrote the songs, the lyrics hold a patriarchal representation of women based on conventional stereotypes but there is a clear difference between the roles that are given on women when these songs are written to be sung by men or women. The students identify with some of stereotypes, wich in fact are quite accepted by society. However, other students consider them obsolete (such as virginity) and don´t feel represented by them.
Descripción La música tradicionalmente folclórica ha confirmado definiciones arraigadas de lo que constituye la masculinidad y la feminidad. El pindín o música típica panameña, no solo es la esencia popular de la sociedad panameña, sino que también es un motor de la cultura popular juvenil. Este estudio examina como los jóvenes universitarios dan sentido a la representación femenina en el pindín, el género musical más escuchado en los medios y con más representaciones públicas en Panamá, y cómo los jóvenes relacionan estos mensajes con su propia feminidad. Muchos investigadores han utilizado únicamente la crítica de contenidos para estudiar la interpretación de las audiencias para averiguar, desde una perspectiva de género cómo las mujeres panameñas están representadas en el pindín, cómo las estudiantes universitarias interpretan esta representación, y el efecto que producen estas representaciones sobre la propia feminidad de las estudiantes. El estudio encontró que, en el pindín, la representación patriarcal de la mujer en Panamá se transmite desde la mirada masculina. En el análisis de contenido se encontró que, ya sean hombres o mujeres los que escriban las canciones, las letras tienen una representación patriarcal de la mujer basada en estereotipos convencionales, aunque hay una clara diferencia entre los roles que se le dan a la mujer cuando estas canciones se escriben para ser cantadas por hombres o por mujeres. Así mismo, que los alumnos se identifican con algunos de los estereotipos, que de hecho son bastante aceptados por la sociedad. Sin embargo, algunos estudiantes consideran estos estereotipos obsoletos (como el mito de la virginidad) y no se sienten representados por ellos.
