Saint Augustine of Hippo, Doctor of the Catholic Church, is recognized for his legacy of knowledge; Virtue, Science and Charity being the motto with which the Augustinians identify themselves. However, how can this help the Teacher in his work? The aim of this essay is to reflect on these aspects. A total of 30 documents were consulted, addressing as thematic axes the moral virtues in the teaching field, how science and wisdom are related and why the teaching-learning process must always be accompanied by charity. According to the analysis, the most relevant and applicable moral virtues in teaching are prudence, justice, strength and temperance; while other virtues are governed by the first ones. Science by itself is limited, so wisdom complements it in a practical way and is applicable to life itself. Charity, understood as the genuine interest in helping others, must be the north in the teaching-learning process, because education is a vocation of service. In conclusion, the teachings of Saint Augustine of Hippo can strengthen the teaching profession, potentially having a positive impact on students and society. Descripción
San Agustín de Hipona, Doctor de la Iglesia Católica, es reconocido por su legado de conocimientos; siendo Virtud, Ciencia y Caridad el lema con el cual los agustinos se identifican. Sin embargo, ¿cómo esto puede ayudar al Docente en su labor? El objetivo del presente ensayo es reflexionar sobre estos aspectos. Se consultó un total de 30 documentos, abordando como ejes temáticos las virtudes morales en el ámbito docente, cómo se relacionan la ciencia y la sabiduría y por qué el proceso enseñanza-aprendizaje siempre debe ir acompañado de la caridad. De acuerdo con el análisis, las virtudes morales más relevantes y aplicables en el ámbito docente son la prudencia, la justicia, la fortaleza y la templanza; mientras que otras virtudes son gobernadas por las primeras. La ciencia por sí misma es limitada, por lo que la sabiduría la complementa de manera práctica y aplicable a la vida misma. La caridad, entendida como el interés genuino en ayudar a los demás, debe ser el norte en el proceso enseñanza-aprendizaje, porque la educación es una vocación de servicio. En conclusión, las enseñanzas de San Agustín de Hipona pueden fortalecer el ejercicio docente, pudiendo impactar positivamente en los estudiantes y la sociedad.
