Descripción 1,387 records of birth weight were analyzed (BW) of Guzerat cattle were analyzed, registered from 2012 to 2022, belonging to the CA Old Mother Livestock Genetic Center, located in Papelón, Portuguese state. To estimate heritability (h2) for PN, 3 different statistical models were used, using the REML method to calculate the variance components and heritability. To know the effect of the fixed factors (sex and year of birth), an F test and the P value criterion were used, where P values < 0.05 (5%) indicate significant differences between the levels of a factor. To calculate the descriptive statistics, the SAS program was used and the variation components of the first model were used, and Wombat was used for the remaining models. Direct (h2) and maternal (m2) heritability for PN were low (h2<0.25) for the 3 models (only m2 was measured in the third model), indicating that the differences observed in PN are only attributed to additive effects. and maternal to a lesser extent. Due to the low heritability for PN, genetic selection to improve this trait is expected to cause a late effect on trait improvement in the population. Although the heritability is low for PN, it is recommended to take these results into consideration, with the objective of avoiding dystocic births caused by the birth of very heavy calves and also correcting the appearance of weak calves due to very low birth weights.
Descripción Se analizaron 1387 registros de peso al nacer (PN) de vacunos Guzerat, registrados desde el año 2012 hasta el 2022, pertenecientes al centro genético ganadería madre vieja CA, ubicado en Papelon estado portuguesa. Para estimar la heredabilidad (h2) para PN se utilizaron 3 modelos estadísticos diferentes, usando el método de REML para calcular los componentes de varianza y la heredabilidad. Para conocer el efecto de los factores fijos (sexo y año de nacimiento), se utilizó una prueba F y el criterio del valor P, donde valores de P < 0.05 (5%) indican diferencias significativas entre los niveles de un factor. Para calcular las estadísticas descriptivas se utilizó el programa y los componentes de varianza del primer modelo se usó el programa SAS, y para los modelos restantes uso el Wombat. La heredabilidad directa (h2) y materna (m2) para PN resultaron bajas (h2<0.25) para los 3 modelos lo que indica que las diferencias observadas en el PN solo son atribuidas a efectos aditivos y maternos en menor proporción. Debido a la baja heredabilidad para PN, se espera que la selección genética para mejorar esta característica cause un efecto tardío en la mejora del carácter en la población. Aunque la heredabilidad es baja para PN se recomienda tomar en consideración estos resultados, con el objetivo de poder evitar partos distócicos causados por el nacimiento de becerros muy pesados y también corregir la aparición de becerros débiles debido a pesos muy bajos al nacer.
